Retirement beckons

Today I retire as principal of Orritor Primary School and Nursery Unit after 27 year memorable years.

When I took charge 27 years ago our enrolment numbers were half of what they are now and there was no nursery provision. There were 5 teachers and no classroom assistants. Mrs Gibson was the secretary and Reggie and Audrey cleaned and supervised at dinner time. We had 5 classrooms, no sports hall or resource areas and the staff shared the principal’s office as their staffroom. No iPads and no internet! All very different from the facilities we enjoy today.

Throughout my time here I was blessed with very supportive governors, led by Rev gentlemen, Ivor Smith and Brian Cruise, and latterly Wilbert Mayne, all of whom worked tirelessly to help realise a vision of where the school should be.

The teaching staff throughout the years bought into this and through their hard work and diligence developed the ethos and reputation we now enjoy. They work tirelessly for the children in their care, regularly above and beyond their contracted hours. They embraced change and worked outside their comfort zones, particularly over the last two years, for the good of the children and the school, to gain the reputation it now enjoys.

As classroom assistants began to appear in school, we were able to cater for more support at Foundation Stage and also help address any SEN needs. These assistants are now an invaluable part of the school and provide quality support for both pupils and teachers- also adding to the school’s reputation and standing.

In Reggie Curran and Audrey Gillis we had two people who gave sterling service for over 30 years each and their retirement this year ends an era also. Alan McClung now takes up their mantle.

Beavering away in the office are Mrs Dallas and Mrs Thom whose works oil the wheels of the team in their always efficient ways.

Of all the changes over the years I believe the most important one was the introduction of a nursery unit. The subsequent appointment of Miss Thompson took this facility to the highest heights and her MBE this year was recognition of her undoubted ability and dedication to our youngest school members.

The school looks forward now to the arrival of a new Principal, Mr Frizzell, and while change will be inevitable, I’ve no doubt all the staff will rise to the challenges ahead. He inherits a vice-principal who will provide great support and local knowledge, as she did for me.

But most of all he inherits a school full of great children, each different and with different talents, with their life ahead of them. The challenge is to make sure they leave our school equipped for that life in whatever they do….. and have some fun along the way !

Thank you to all parents over the years who have supported their children and the school in many ways- it was always appreciated by the staff… long may it continue!

Can I also add my thanks for all the many cards and presents I've received from parents and families... you've all been very generous.

I must make mention of the Parents Support Group who continue to amaze me with their creativity in fund raising and providing fun events for both pupils and parents.

I’m retiring but I will always hold Orritor, the community and the school, its people and pupils, dear in my heart. The lovely comments and presents have surpassed my expectations and I would like to thank everyone for them. With COVID restrictions I didn’t get the opportunity to thank you all in person but please accept my heartfelt thanks to you all. I hope I haven’t left anyone out, if I have please forgive me.
